What to Know About Black History Month

February is often thought of as a month that celebrates love and presidents.  However, February is also recognized as Black History Month.  Often referred to as the “Father of Black History”, Dr. Carter G. Woodson launched “Negro History Week” in 1926.  Dr. Woodson selected the second week of February to celebrate “Negro History Week” which coincides with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.  He believed that it was important that all Americans learn about the contributions of African Americans to the country’s history and culture.  After 50 years of recognizing Black History Week, the celebration time period extended throughout the entire month.  In 1976, Black History Month was born. President Gerald Ford was the first U.S. president to officially recognize the celebration.
